understanding Cough

There are two types of coughs: dry and wet cough. Dry Coughs occur when the airway passages are irritated by the first stages of a cold or infection. As the body reacts to the illness, it produces mucus or phlegm, which will be expectorated by a wet cough.

For starters, find out what’s causing your cough.

Coughs caused by the common cold will usually go away in a few weeks. Chronic, persistent coughs may be due to underlying medical conditions such as asthma, acid reflux or allergies. It could also due to medications you take.

Speak with your doctor if the cough persists for more than a few weeks, or if you are coughing up thick mucus or show symptoms like fever, chills, fatigue or weight loss. Seek emergency medical help if you have trouble breathing or coughing up blood.

Management

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER

Stay hydrated. Fluids help thin secretions and soothe an irritated throat. Dry, hacking coughs may respond to honey in hot water, tea, or lemon juice.
Refrain from smoking and do not use other forms of tobacco, especially while you have a cough.
Elevate your head with extra pillows at night to ease a cough.
Avoid exposure to inhaled irritants, such as smoke, dust, or other pollutants, or wear a face mask that is appropriate for the exposure.
Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air. Use only water in the humidifier and refer to product manual for further information.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist about local preparations, presented mainly as cough drop or lozenges to soothe an irritated throat.
Note: If you suspect problems with stomach acid may be contributing to your cough, do consult with your doctor.
